I’m in the final stages of assembling my crocheted aquarium now, but I realised I needed some realistic rocks to support the corals, so I designed a collection of smooth flattened stones that I could stack and arrange. The Stone Collection turned out so pretty that I think these stones also have decorative appeal far beyond my original concept!
I love the calm, peaceful vibe of the stacked stones. They also make a lovely natural-looking arrangement, piled in a bowl:
And I also designed a little companion pattern – a cave for my baby octopus (or any other small aquatic animal!) to hide in:

About the Patterns
The Stone Collection and Underwater Cave are both speedy no-sew patterns. Make them all in a single shade of grey or use a variety of natural stone colours (e.g. different shades of grey and brown, plus black, white, beige, etc) like I did. I found that heathered yarns are especially effective for representing natural stone.
These stones are great stash-busters for all neutral yarn shades, and the smallest Pebble pattern is ideal for using up scraps of yarn!
Stone Collection includes three designs in different sizes: Pebble (small), Stone (medium) and Rock (large), all with smooth, flattened, slightly asymmetric shapes. By varying the stuffing level, you can shape each stone to be flatter or more rounded, giving you even more variety. The pattern also includes tips for stuffing and arrangement, and a special smooth finishing technique.
The bonus Underwater Cave is crocheted in one piece with a double-layer construction and a sturdy lower edge that makes it stable enough to hold its shape without any additional support. It’s the perfect size for a Baby Octopus to peek out of!
