A Crocheted Fish Bowl!

PlanetJune Under the Sea CAL 2026 - logo

We unanimously decided that we need a little more time to complete our CAL projects – hasn’t this summer just flown by? – so I’ve extended the Under the Sea crochet-along to run right through to the end of September. That gives you a bonus 30 days if you’d like to join in – find all the CAL details here!

It makes me so happy to see all these colourful projects flooding in, and I can’t wait to see how we each decide to display them over the next month.

My Aquarium Update: A Fish Bowl Diversion

My large crocheted aquarium tank is progressing – the painted background and crocheted floor are finished, and I’ve been crocheting rocks and an adorable little octopus cave to provide support for all my corals and aquatic amigurumi, and hopefully make the tank look more interesting.

But I got a little distracted when I had the opportunity to acquire a perfect glass fish bowl, and I had to drop everything and make a crocheted fish bowl arrangement! And here’s the result:

It’s difficult to photograph through curved glass, with its distortion and reflections, but this fish bowl looks so cute and vibrant in person! You can see the colours more clearly from the top:

Isn’t this a cool display idea? It’s an easy-care alternative to a real fish tank (and without the trauma of ever finding a floating fish…)

If you have an old fishbowl, or find one in a thrift store, now you know what you can do with it! And you don’t even need to add a fish – I think it looks really good as a coral reef display too:

A New Pattern?

By the way, my rocks and cave could become a new crochet pattern if anyone else might find them useful: I’ve designed 3 sizes of stones ranging from the pebbles you can see in the fish bowl above to much larger flat stones that the corals are sitting on. I think they’ll look stylish as ‘river rock’-type décor as well as in a crocheted coral reef… Let me know if you’d like me to turn them into a pattern!

Either way, I’m now reinvigorated to continue with the final assembly on my big aquarium throughout September – it’s going to be so much larger than this cute fish bowl, and now I’m starting to doubt I have enough elements to fill it!
