AmiDogs Airedale Terrier

Would you believe I made this pattern over Christmas, and haven’t had a chance to publish it yet?! Time to change that – please allow me to introduce you to my Airedale Terrier. Called ‘King of Terriers’ because it is the largest British terrier, it has a very distinctive appearance with its squared-off body shape and squared-off face!

My Airedale pattern comes with instructions to give it a fluffy beard, and instructions to make one with just the square muzzle shape and no additional beard (it looks more like an adorable Airedale puppy this way!) so you can take your pick and choose the look you prefer. The AmiDogs Airedale Terrier amigurumi crochet pattern is now available in the PlanetJune shop!

If you’re tempted by my AmiDogs patterns (the Airedale is the 14th in the series!) don’t forget that when you pick a custom set of your favourite three breeds, you get the third pattern for half price! To take advantage of this, choose the AmiDogs Custom Set listing in the shop (you won’t get the discount if you add three patterns individually to your cart).

Have I missed your favourite breed(s)? I’ll be designing more AmiDogs patterns this year, and I’d love to know in advance which breeds might be popular (although I have a few on my ‘must do’ list already!). If you don’t see your favourites in the little pics above, please leave me a comment with your suggestions and I’ll take them into account when I’m picking new breeds to add to my kennel 😀

    Hi, June!

I’ve purchased several of your patterns in the past, but wanted the airedale because a friend raises and shows this breed. One thing I noticed is that her dogs’ faces are fluffy al the way aroung their muzzle, and, she has them groomed so that their front legs are fluffy as well. Do you think I will be able to adapt your pattern to include a “beard” all the way around the muzzle and on the legs? I know your pattern is for a puppy, but I want to try a miniature adult that looks like her dogs.

Also, the black area on the airedale’s back is larger on my friend’s dogs. It goes all the way up to the neck, includes a little of the neck, and their entire tail. Since I’ll be making a couple of dogs I want to look like hers, do you think I might be able to enlarge the black part? It may take some trial and error, but if you have any suggestions for me, I’d be more than happy to try them! I was thinking of making a grid to indicate where I want black stitches. Would that work?

Your work is gorgeous, and I love your patterns! My granddaughter still loves the boxer puppy I made for her! Her instructions were that it should look “just like Izzie” (my dog). I ended up having to sew Izzie’s white stripe (that runs from her nose to her neck) on top of the head, but it looks just like Izzie!

Thank you for all your wonderful patterns!

      Hi Jane,

Yep, you can brush any areas that you want to be fluffy (see www.planetjune.com/brush for more on this) – just be aware that brushing will add extra width to the shape in the places you brush, so it won’t look quite the same as the shape I designed if you brush additional areas.

And if you want to try modifying the body colours, I’d suggest that unless you can tell this from the pattern’s cover photos, you should make a standard body first, and then count stitches/rounds to decide how much further forward the black part should start to match the dog in question. The body is a simple shape, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to figure out how to make your changes. Good luck with it!

    Hi.

Newbie here. I have to say you make a lot of gorgeous things! As a Norewgian dog-trainer and Vet Nurse, and previous dog-owner, I just love dogs. I’m missing the Setters, like the Irish, English and my favourite: the Gordon Setter.

And I have another challenge for you (I apologize if you already have meda some as I haven’t been through your entire site yet). What about ferrets? I have four of them, I’ve had 7 in total since 2002.

Look forward to seeing more here!

Aryn, it’s nice to hear from you! Great idea about the Setters. You’re right, I haven’t done one yet – I’ll add them to the list! As for ferrets, take a look at my Fuzzy Ferret pattern 🙂

Love your dogs! I’d love to see a poodle-I’m allergic to other dogs… 🙁 (possibly even amigurumi ones!)

I don’t crochet and I’m so bummed! Can the pattern be converted to a knit pattern? I have two Airedales!
    What a sweet pattern!

      Hi Sue,

      I’m afraid I don’t knit so I can’t convert the pattern – I’m sorry!

Maybe you could learn to crochet? My Amigurumi Help tutorials would teach you everything you need to know: www.planetjune.com/help. All my patterns only use single crochet – the easiest stitch – and crochet is far easier than knitting…

Yay – thank you all! It always feels like a risk to put something a bit different out there and see how it’ll be received. I’m glad you like him! Lots more breeds-with-fluffy-bits possibilities are open to me now 😀

And thanks for the dog breed suggestions – keep ’em coming!

I love the beard on this Airedale! I have two Jack Russell Terriers, one of them has a beard. I purchased your pattern for the Jack Russell and had a good friend crochet 4 of them (2 of each pup customized with their color markings) them for me so my husband and I could each have a set at work. (I was not patient enough to learn to crochet to make them myself!) Now I want to have her make me two more Skeeter’s using the beard from the Airedale pattern!

Your patterns are works of art and so professional. Thank you for offering such unique patterns and a wide variety of crafting options!
