Flickrgecko crochet pattern
If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook, you’ll have already had a sneak peek at this guy:
He’s a gecko, a type of smallish lizard found in warm to tropical climates. Leopard geckos, the type you’ll see most often kept as a pet, have tiny claws on their feet, but most other gecko species have toe pads that let them climb up vertical walls!
My first introduction to a day gecko was in Hawaii last year, where this little guy was living in our room and spent his time climbing up and down the window frame:
So cute! I’ve had the idea to make a gecko in the back of my mind ever since then. My little Hawaiian buddy was only about 3″ long (a bit small for a crocheted version), but some of the Madagascan species of day gecko reach 9-11″ long. You’re probably familiar with Madagascan geckos from the talking one in those Geico ads 
My crocheted gecko is 10″ long, and, like his cousins, climbs the walls with his special toe pads! Here he is climbing my window:
I think he’s after my origami decorations!

(Okay, he needed a little assistance to stay in place on the window, but isn’t the effect perfect?!)
Gecko is only my 2nd reptile design (after my Sea Turtle) but he was a lot of fun to make. Maybe I should try some other more unusual animals in future – what do you think?

Adorable! We have a family (or two or three) of Geckos that live on our front porch. I like them because they eat bugs. Bugs are my enemy. *lol*

That’s super cute! I don’t think I’ve commented on your blog before, but I just love your work! I’ve just gotten into crocheting (lots of granny squares for a blanket) and hopefully when I’m done with my current project I’ll be ready for something a little bit more ambitious. I’ll definitely have to get my hands on some of your awesome patterns!

I’m currently in Italy and these little guys are everywhere and they’re adorable! My husband is in love with them, but as we can’t bring one home with us maybe I’ll make him one of these

What a great job. You captured the gecko body type perfectly! One of my sons had several (real) reptiles when he was growing up. He would have begged for one of these. Maybe he still would

ok I give! how did you make something that would be a bit heavy stick so well to your window??
He is adorable! in my home country lizards gekos and Iguanas are such a common thing to see on rooftops taking some sun, or on walls waiting for a fly.. oh how I miss those sights

Diana, I cheated – he’s actually stuck to the window screen (wire mesh), not the window glass. So I opened the screen and stuck pins through the mesh from the other side to support the gecko – clever, huh?

This is so cute and given me an idea to make one in the colours of my brothers favourite football team as a present. He currently has a real dragon lizard which looks very similar.
