Two original crochet amigurumi patterns: Cuttlefish and Nautilus, from the Baby Cephalopods range by June Gilbank. These mini amigurumi take only 25-30m of yarn apiece, and work up quickly with minimal finishing, as they only have 2-3 pieces each!

Baby Cuttlefish has an undulating fin all the way around its body.
Baby Nautilus has a mass of tentacles and a shell with a hood.

  • Cuttlefish squirt a brown ink called sepia - this is the source of the name of the colour sepia.
  • Nautiluses are ancient cephalopods known as 'living fossils' because they've remained virtually unchanged for 500 million years.

Yarn: worsted weight yarn (the pictured samples use Lion Brand Vanna's Choice yarn)

Hook: US E / 3.5mm

Details: The Nautilus' body and shell look like two separate pieces, but they are actually one piece – the hood is the only separate part. (I think you’ll enjoy my special technique though – it’s very clever! I’ve included lots of extra photos with it to make sure everyone will able to create the clever two-piece shell/body effect.)

Size: cuttlefish approx 6" long; nautilus approx 5" long

Eyes: 10-12mm (the pictured samples use 12mm eyes)
