Yeti & Bigfoot crochet patterns

I was commissioned by comic book writer Jeff McClelland to design a cute yeti – Jeff’s comic book series, Teddy and the Yeti, is about a robot and a yeti who defend the Earth from external threats. A yeti is a bit of a departure from my usual subject matter, but it was an interesting challenge and here’s what I came up with, using colours inspired by the comic book yeti and adding a large dose of cuteness to the mix:

The Yeti, or Abominable Snowman, is a legendary Himalayan creature. I’ve also made his North American cousin, the Bigfoot, or Sasquatch:

My Yeti and Bigfoot are cute and shy and have no idea why some people think of them as ‘abominable’ or ‘monsters’ – it must be because of their giant size – they stand at fully 7 inches tall 😉 They have brushed bodies and jointed arms. If you’d like to make your own mini army of not-so-abominable mythical creatures, the Yeti and Bigfoot crochet pattern is now available in my shop!

What do you think? Should I come up with some more Mythical Creatures designs? I’d love to design a dragon, for starters…

Sorry I’ve been a bit slow to respond – I’m working on the edits for my book and they are keeping me fully occupied!

I love all the mythical creatures ideas; I’ve made a special page for them in my ideas notebook so I won’t forget about them – now I just need to find the time to start researching mythology so I can do justice to them…

Jeff: Did I mention that I love that your Yeti is female? Unexpected but very cool! And I’m sure there’s some overlap between crafters and comic book fans 🙂

People always seem to just assume that the Yeti (and probably more accurately, Bigfoot) is male, as if males hold claim to big hairy monsters. I ask them, ‘if there’s a Bigfoot, there had to be a momma and daddy Bigfoot around at some point, right?’ And they get that “I never thought of that before!” look, which I think is pretty funny.

FAN TAS TIC!!! These are AWESOME! I totally agree with all the people above!! Dragon, Unicorn, and Phoenix!! Hmm. How about a Minotaur?! Loch Ness Monster? Oooh, Medusa! Any of the Greek Mythical creatures. You don’t have a wolf do you? You know what would be really fun?! To make “story book” characters! Like Red Riding Hood with the Wolf, Rapunzel with REALLY long hair, The Three Pigs, etc. etc. The possibilities are endless!

Wow, June, thanks for posting this and letting everyone see the Yeti in all her crocheted glory! I’m thrilled with how things turned out, and I can’t wait to see how my attempts at actually creating one go.

I’m not sure if there’s much crossover between the crochet and comic book crowds, but it’d be cool if someone found Teddy and the Yeti through this site and vice versa. I put a little blurb on my site (plug!) about this design: teddyandtheyeti.blogspot.com/2010/05/crochet-anyone.html

It seems quite obvious to create a Bigfoot version as well. I can’t believe I didn’t think of that! Way to go!
