I didn&#8217;t like how thin the strap was in the pattern, or that the bag had no way to close, so I knew I&#8217;d have to make up my own pattern.\u00a0The July whiplash challenge\u00a0to make a bag came along at just the right time to get me started.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted\u00a0a small bag to hold essentials (purse, keys, phone, etc)\u00a0that wouldn&#8217;t be too bulky for when I go\u00a0out in the evening, but that wouldn&#8217;t look too &#8216;dressy&#8217; for everyday use.\u00a015x15cm seemed about the right size.<\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"\/blog\/images\/bag1.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"\" alt=\"black crocheted bag with blue satin lining\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/bag1.jpg\" width=\"250\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I crocheted the bag with black size 10 crochet cotton and a 1.5mm hook,\u00a0using a modified cross treble stitch.\u00a0I wanted an open crochet pattern so that the lining could show through,\u00a0and the gaps around the &#8216;X&#8217; stitches worked out well for that. I made up the pattern as I went along &#8211; decreasing the Xs to make the flap of the bag was an interesting challenge.<\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"\/blog\/images\/bag2.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"\" alt=\"bag flap and button\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/bag2.jpg\" width=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I used a\u00a0small piece\u00a0of gorgeous periwinkle blue satin for the lining, and covered\u00a0the button with the same fabric to tie everything\u00a0together. The strap is 350 rows of single crochet stitches, crocheted tightly for strength.<\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"\/blog\/images\/bag3.jpg\" data-rel=\"lightbox-gallery-0\" data-rl_title=\"\" data-rl_caption=\"\"><img decoding=\"async\" title=\"\" alt=\"open bag showing blue satin lining\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/bag3.jpg\" width=\"400\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The materials for this bag only cost $5, but crocheting all those Xs took a long time!
