As this is a craft (and wildlife) blog, I&#8217;m keeping this post to just my wildlife photos, but, if you&#8217;re interested in knowing more about my trip, I&#8217;ve written it up separately as a travel journal with lots more pics: <a href=\"\/blog\/a-bornean-adventure\/\">A Bornean Adventure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>We were privileged to get to watch these two rescued orphan orangutan babies in training. Once they&#8217;re old enough and have learned how to survive in the wild, they&#8217;ll be released back into the forest. He&#8217;s too dangerous to be released back into the wild, so he&#8217;s kept at the centre for educational purposes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14051\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/borneo\/crocodile.jpg\" alt=\"crocodile\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/crocodile.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/crocodile-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>While Dave was at his conference during the week, I wandered around Kuching\u00a0city and looked for more common, everyday wildlife. Here&#8217;s an adult male with his pendulous nose:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14075\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/borneo\/proboscis1.jpg\" alt=\"proboscis1\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/proboscis1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/proboscis1-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And a younger male, without such a\u00a0giant nose:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14076\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/borneo\/proboscis2.jpg\" alt=\"proboscis2\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/proboscis2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/proboscis2-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We also saw Bornean Bearded Pigs &#8211; not the cutest pigs on the planet, but cool to see. Here&#8217;s a big hermit crab:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14046\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/borneo\/crab1.jpg\" alt=\"crab1\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/crab1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/crab1-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Do you see all those little &#8216;L&#8217; shapes in the sand? They are actually Fiddler crabs &#8211; hard to spot unless you know to look for them!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14047\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/borneo\/crab2.jpg\" alt=\"crab2\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/crab2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/crab2-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a close- up. They look strange because they only have one big white claw:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14048\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/borneo\/crab3.jpg\" alt=\"crab3\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/crab3.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/crab3-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the beach, we saw lots of these sand-ball formations. With careful watching, I managed to spot the source, although they&#8217;re almost completely invisible when they aren&#8217;t racing across the sand.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14049\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/borneo\/crab4.jpg\" alt=\"crab4\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/crab4.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/crab4-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a sand bubbler crab! Even at super zoom and perfect focus he&#8217;s still hard to spot &#8211; can you see him?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14050\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/borneo\/crab5.jpg\" alt=\"crab5\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/crab5.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/crab5-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Mudskippers are, quite literally, fish out of water &#8211; a strange fish that looks part-frog, can walk with its fins on land, and can breathe through its skin (although only when it&#8217;s wet). I didn&#8217;t think I&#8217;d ever see one of these outside of\u00a0a wildlife\u00a0documentary&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14068\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/borneo\/mudskipper.jpg\" alt=\"mudskipper\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/mudskipper.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/mudskipper-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Back in the jungle, we saw long-tailed macaques, grooming:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14062\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/borneo\/macaque2.jpg\" alt=\"macaque2\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/macaque2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/macaque2-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And look, it&#8217;s a little baby macaque!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14061\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/borneo\/macaque1.jpg\" alt=\"macaque1\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/macaque1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/macaque1-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Of course, we found the only venomous snake in the park: Wagler&#8217;s Pit Viper:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14073\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/borneo\/pitviper1.jpg\" alt=\"pitviper1\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/pitviper1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/pitviper1-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And here&#8217;s a smaller one (check my travel journal\u00a0for my almost-scary story about these!):<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14074\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/borneo\/pitviper2.jpg\" alt=\"pitviper2\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/pitviper2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/pitviper2-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A huge and intimidating mass\u00a0of highly poisonous bees:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-14037\" src=\"\/blog\/images\/borneo\/bees.jpg\" alt=\"bees\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/bees.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.planetjune.com\/blog\/images\/borneo\/bees-150x100.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And actually, for me this was the most exciting of all, apart from the orangutans: an animal I didn&#8217;t know existed until I saw one! This is a &#8216;flying lemur&#8217; (although it&#8217;s not an actual lemur); it&#8217;s also called a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colugo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">colugo<\/a>. They are nocturnal, so spotting one during the daytime is pretty rare. She is clinging vertically onto the tree, facing the left &#8211; you can just see an eye at the top.
