If not, read on:<\/p>\n<h2>Basic stitches for Amigurumi<\/h2>\n<p>To learn to make amigurumi, you only need to know a few very basic crochet stitches. This brief guide will teach you all the basic stitches you&#8217;ll need to be able to follow an amigurumi pattern and start to crochet your own toys!<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Note:<\/strong> This guide, as with all my patterns and tutorials, use standard (US) crochet terminology.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>Contents<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"#slipknot\">Slip Knot (starting loop)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#ch\">Chain (ch)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#sc\">Single Crochet (sc)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#2sc\">Single crochet increase (2 sc)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#sc2tog\">Single crochet decrease (sc2tog)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#slst\">Slip Stitch (sl st)<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"#round\">Crocheting in the round<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>For more advanced techniques, e.g. magic ring, colour changes, joining pieces, see the main <a href=\"\/blog\/amigurumi-help\/\">Amigurumi Help<\/a> page.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"slipknot\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Slip Knot (starting loop)<\/h2>\n<p>Make a loop about 6\u201d from end of yarn:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r1b.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Insert hook through loop and hook the long end of the yarn:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Use hook to draw yarn through loop:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r3.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Pull loop tight:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r4.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"ch\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Chain (ch)<\/h2>\n<p>With starting loop on hook, yarn over:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r5.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Draw hook back through loop on hook (1 ch completed):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r7.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Repeat the steps (yarn over, draw hook back through loop on hook) to make each ch st:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r9.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"sc\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Single Crochet (sc)<\/h2>\n<h3>Single crochet into a chain (usually first row\/round only)<\/h3>\n<p>Insert hook into 2nd ch from hook.<br \/>\n<em><strong>Note:<\/strong> loop on hook does NOT count as a chain:<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r10.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yarn over:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r11.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Draw yarn through chain (2 loops on hook):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r12.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nYarn over:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r13.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>Draw yarn through both loops on hook (1 loop on hook, 1 sc made):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r15.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/> \t\t <\/p>\n<p>Make a sc in each ch (or as specified in pattern):<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r16.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"sc2\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Single crochet into a single crochet (usually all rows\/rounds except first)<\/h3>\n<p>From the top, each crocheted stitch looks like a \u2018V\u2019 shape:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r19.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Unless otherwise specified in a pattern, insert your hook under <strong>both<\/strong> top loops to begin the stitch, as shown below:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r20.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Complete the stitch as shown for <em>single crochet into a chain<\/em>: yarn over, draw up a loop (2 loops on hook), yarn over, draw yarn through both loops on hook.\t<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"2sc\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Single crochet increase (2 sc)<\/h2>\n<p>To increase in single crochet, make the first stitch as usual:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r21.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Insert hook back into the <strong>same<\/strong> stitch to form the 2nd sc:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r22.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Complete the sc as usual:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r23.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"sc2tog\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Single crochet decrease (sc2tog)<\/h2>\n<p>Insert hook into stitch:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r24.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yarn over and draw up a loop:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r25.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Insert hook into <strong>next<\/strong> stitch:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r26.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yarn over and draw up a loop:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r27.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yarn over and draw through <strong>all three<\/strong> loops on hook:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r28.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>1 sc decrease completed:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r29.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once you are comfortable with this method for a basic decrease, try learning the <a href=\"\/invdec\">Invisible Decrease<\/a> to make your decreases practically invisible!<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"slst\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Slip Stitch (sl st)<\/h2>\n<p>Insert hook into stitch:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r30.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Yarn over and draw up a loop; draw through loop on hook:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r32.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>1 sl st completed:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r33.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a name=\"round\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Crocheting in the round<\/h2>\n<p>Ch 2:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r34.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r35.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Complete sc and place stitch marker into the top of this stitch:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r36.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Continue to make sc into the same space (number as specified in pattern). Stitches will form a circle:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r37.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To begin the second round, insert hook into the first st of the previous round (as marked by the stitch marker). It is easier to first remove the stitch marker, then make the stitch:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r38.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After completing the first stitch, place the stitch marker into this stitch:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r39.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Continue to crochet around the circle as specified in pattern. Picture below shows end of Rnd 2; to begin Rnd 3, remove stitch marker, make first stitch then place stitch marker into this stitch:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/blog\/tut_images\/basics_r40.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once you are comfortable with this method, try the <a href=\"\/magicring\">Magic Ring<\/a> method to avoid leaving that hole in the middle of your starting round.<\/p>\n<p>Now you should know everything you need to know to be able to crochet your first amigurumi!
