lucky bamboo crochet pattern

I’ve had this one in the works for a while, so I’m really happy to finally be able to show you my latest design: Lucky Bamboo. A crocheted Lucky Bamboo arrangement never needs watering, never dies, and is always fresh and green. It’s the perfect thing to brighten up your office desk, or to give as an unusual and thoughtful gift. Add a little Zen tranquillity to your life with a Lucky Bamboo!

Did you know that Lucky Bamboo isn’t really bamboo at all? It’s actually a tropical plant called Dracaena sanderiana (Ribbon Dracaena) that just happens to have a bamboo-like appearance. Lucky Bamboo is often associated with Feng Shui, and the number of stalks in an arrangement have significance in Chinese tradition: three stalks (as in my design) for happiness, five stalks for wealth, seven for health…

I really stretched myself with this design: I wanted to make a Chinese-style pot with sloped squares sides, but, as you probably know, working amigurumi-style in the round really doesn’t lend itself to making corners. After much trial and error, I’ve managed to develop a technique that produces real square corners, even while working in the round in spirals! The shaping is built right into the crochet, and even when you stuff it, the square corners remain right up the sides. It’s a little tricky to see with my black pot, but it may be more obvious when you see the pot at an angle:

The Lucky Bamboo pattern also features a few bonus modifications you can use to make the pattern your own:

  • Full patterns for three stalk sizes, and instructions to create different stalk lengths
  • Three different leaf styles so you can mix and match to create a larger arrangement, if desired
  • Alternative colour scheme, so that if you can only find one suitable shade of green, you can still achieve the full lucky bamboo effect

If you’d like to make a Lucky Bamboo of your own, or to give as a special gift, the pattern is now available in the PlanetJune shop.

I hope you like my design! I’ve been getting requests for more plant designs for a long time now, so I hope this will satisfy the plant-lovers out there 🙂 Any other design requests? Keep ’em coming – I’m always on the lookout for new, original, ideas.

It’s a creative design though. Love it! For how many days did you finish it? Do you have any instructional video on how to make it? Thanks

I don’t remember how long it took to design – probably a few weeks, on and off. It would probably only take a few hours to make the whole thing, following the pattern. You can buy the pattern from my shop if you’d like to make one too – there’s no video, but it has detailed step by step instructions with lots of progress photos to help you at every step 🙂

  3. This is lovely, June. Even my husband likes it. 😉

To keep with the Asian theme, what about a money tree or a jade tree? (Of course, that means lots of leaves. Eek!)

By the way love the idea curegirl had! I might be so inclined to do that!

That is AWESOME!!! I just redid my kitchen Asian style so I will be getting it very soon even though I just bought a live lucky bamboo plant. Maybe I will make on for my Dad for Christmas, he’d love it!. Oh and I love the idea for the bonsai tree and the cactus. Maybe an aloe vera plant? Great job!

  6. I thought first looking at your title..it was a real bamboo plant..but when the photo load..its look just look a like bamboo..then you said it was Ribbon Dracaena plant..:). I’m doing bamboo floor site hoping people can use bamboo product more than hardwood floor product so we can save more hard wood tree being cut down. Make our world more warm..:(

  7. That’s soooo cute! I bet you could even embroider some neat Chinese-themed stuff on the side of the pot, too… a dragon or maybe Buddha for luck? For those inclined to do such things.

I’m very lazy, so my suggestions are deeply suspect. 🙂

Wow, this looks amazing! I love the delicate bamboo, but I also really love the pot. I can see the pot elongated and used for an ami-bonsai (I would *love* to see a little ami-bonsai)

I really think you should do some kind mythological creature like a pheonix or the minotaur ect. That would be so cool! The pot is awsome could I get a list of what the different numbers of stalks mean? You can email them to me or leave it as a post I dont care.

I’ll post it here in case anyone else is interested! Here’s a list (taken from The Gardener’s Rake)

Ancient Chinese tradition teaches that the number of Lucky Bamboo stalks have different meanings and will bring different beneficial factors into your life. The ingredients for a happy life are Happiness, Wealth and Longevity.

Three (3) stalks of Lucky Bamboo:
Represent Fu (Happiness), Lu (Wealth) and Soh (Longevity)

Five (5) stalks of Lucky Bamboo:
Represent the 5 different parts of life from which wealth emanates

Six (6) stalks of Lucky Bamboo:
      Represents prosperity and favorable conditions

Seven (7) stalks of Lucky Bamboo:
      Represents good health.

Eight (8) stalks of Lucky Bamboo:
In the Chinese language eight sounds like
