free pattern: Punchneedle Poinsettia

I doubt you’ll remember this from previous years, but I’ve developed my own little holiday crafting tradition of creating a poinsettia every year. I’m not quite sure why I do it, but a tradition that means I only have to make one item per year and forces me to try something new each time sounds pretty good to me. I suppose at some point I’ll run out of ideas for different crafts to make a poinsettia from, but I’m nowhere near that point yet!

In 2006 (well before the recent kanzashi popularity!), I made a kanzashi poinsettia:

In 2007, I designed the famous crocheted poinsettia (with free pattern):

In 2008, I created the polymer clay poinsettia (with free tutorial):

And for this year? Why, it had to be punchneedle embroidery, of course! Here’s the 2009 PlanetJune Poinsettia:

If you’d like to punch your own, the Punchneedle Poinsettia pattern is free! If you’re new to punchneedle, you might also like to consider buying my eBook, The Punchneedle Handbook, which will teach you everything you need to know!

This 2.5″ Poinsettia design uses Punchneedle Embroidery for a fast and festive result. It can be made as an applique and attached to almost anything to give it a more Christmassy feel!

Here are a few ideas for use, to get you started:

  • Attach a felt backing and a pinback to make it into a removable pin
  • Attach a felt backing and hanging loop and use it as a tree decoration
  • Use washable fabric glue to attach it directly to a table runner or fabric napkin ring
  • Use fabric glue to attach it to a bag or purse as a pretty embellishment

I have yet to get out my punchneedle and get to work! BUT, now that I am on vacation for the next couple of weeks, I can’t think of a better time to give it a try! My first project will, naturally, have to be the poinsettia since it is so close to Christmas! I love them too! In fact, somewhere in storage in Atlanta, is some of my Christmas jewelry that I made for myself out of Fimo years ago! Your polymer poinsettia above looks JUST like a pair of earrings I made probably ten to 15 years ago! I sprinkled fine glitter over mine on top of the glaze to give them a little sparkle. I wish I had them now to wear. But, you know what? Since I AM on break, and I DO have clay (sculpy, not Fimo, and I even have some special “light” sculpy!) I think I may just have to make myself another pair to wear here! After all, they are “flowers” so I should be able to get away with it as long as they aren’t Christmas trees or Santas! LOL! They would go nicely with my poinsettia scarf! And hey! The punchneedle one would make a great pin for the scarf! Yay, June! You have inspired me!

Poinsettia are one of my favorite things about Christmas-time. I love all the ones you’ve made. I now have to go and make a polymer clay one and a felt one. Thanks for the inspiration!

I love this June! I’ve never tried Punch needle, but when you did your Serengeti Sunset design I was so “wowed” by it that I decided I had to give it a try. I ordered a beginner’s punch needle kit, as well as the hoop and needle, to get some practice before I attempted your pattern, but I’ve yet to give it a try. The kit promises that ‘all I need to know’ is in the instructions, but I have a feeling I’ll be back to buy your Punch needle eBook.
Anyway…the poinsettia is just beautiful, can’t wait to see what you come up with next year!

  8. What a great tradition June, making Poinsettia’s in a variety of crafts! Love your polymer clay Poinsettia best, but of course I am biased!:-) Great to see that punch needle is coming back. I have several projects I did with it when I was a kid. It’s very fun and looks great. You punch needle Poinsettia is awesome btw!
